Large-format tiles have grown in popularity over the last decade and the trend shows no sign of slowing down either. Our range of large format contemporary tiles is named the Tileworks collection and it is home to a wide selection of concrete, stone, and metal effect tiles in an abundance of neutral tones and finishes. It’s these natural hues and effects that make our Tileworks collection so versatile, along with their large format attributes helping to create seamless style, due to less frequent grout gaps. With so many options, we thought it would be helpful to showcase how this collection can be used throughout all the areas of the home.   Lounge With more and more of us opting for open plan living, lounges with tiles are becoming more popular, due to their functionality and sleek look. You might think that tiles feel cold underfoot but with underfloor heating and an array of textures and finishes available, you needn’t worry. You can also add warmth with soft furnishings and deep rich colours. Pictured below are Portland Stone floor tiles with Midnight Blue large format wall tiles, both from the Tileworks collection.   Hallway Tiles are a brilliant choice for hallway floors, their durability means they can cope with the footfall of everyday life whilst still looking stylish and beautiful. Opting for large format tiles means you can also seamlessly blend into rooms like the kitchen or lounge for an uninterrupted, modern finish. For hallways we love the terrazzo style of our Pietra Lombarda tiles, they are perfect for creating a serene yet functional space.   Kitchen and Utility Kitchens need to be practical spaces and so tiles are a natural choice for walls and floors. As one of the UK’s leading tile manufacturers and suppliers, staying ahead of the curve is imperative and we’re pleased to announce that this year we’ve teamed up with London-based interior design duo, 2LG Studio, to bring you THE top tile trend predictions for 2020…   New Heritage - a modern twist on an old classic   Think decorative details, fine craftsmanship and timeless colourways and you’ve begun to embody a New Heritage interior style. Through incorporating classic qualities of historical interior décor alongside modern influences, you can create a space that withstands the test of time whilst ensuring your home never goes out of style.   Tiles have been a staple within interiors for centuries and despite the evolution of various formats and finishes, it’s the traditional styles that turn heads time after time - from the quintessentially British Victorian Floor Tiles through to artisan glazed and decorative tiles such as Original Style’s Artworks and Winchester tile collections.   “What’s wonderful about the New Heritage trend is that you don’t have to have to a period property to embrace it! Taking influence from the mesmerising Aurora Borealis, you can incorporate an iridescent scheme to create your very own light show. “Iridescent homeware has been creeping into the interiors scene of late and we predict this trend is only going to become bigger and bolder during 2020. It’s no secret that light, both natural and artificial, can make a huge difference to the look and feel of a home and through incorporating reflective surfaces and soft colourways you can help a space feel brighter and livelier.  “Embrace this look with varied intensities; be daring with the glossy glass iridescent brick tiles from Original Style’s Glassworks collection – we LOVE ‘Pink Frost’! – Or if you want to go a step further, the fish scale iridescent mosaic is a real show stopper. Stone, wood, concrete and marble-effects are all available in porcelain tile for a result that’s not only realistic – honestly, they look and feel just like their original counterparts! – but also wonderfully practical. “When it comes to texture play, it’s all about mixing up surface finishes within a space. In modern interiors, simply looking good isn’t good enough – during 2020, we’re anticipating an emphasis on how design feels. This new look, full of contrasts, is based on texture pairing; rough with smooth and matt with gloss, in order to achieve an atmospheric look and sensory experience that draws the eye and encourages touch. “This look can be achieved through installing flooring with a matt finish, such as Original Style’s Victorian Floor Tiles or a stone-effect tile such as ‘Mediterraneo’, in addition to a wall tile with a glossy glaze. Large format contemporary tiles are still a popular choice for homeowners and there’s no sign of the trend slowing down any time soon! So, to keep our collection of large format, contemporary tiles up to date, we’ve refreshed it to include some truly beautiful new options, from gorgeous golden wood effect tones, to bang-on-trend terrazzo styles, there’s plenty to be inspired by.   Deciding on a kitchen style can be stressful, not only are there decisions to be made on cabinetry, colour schemes and fixtures and fittings, but consideration also needs to be given to practicality. Tiles are a natural choice for any kitchen, whether it’s contemporary or classic in style. For kitchens, large-format tiles are arguably the best choice. Larger surface areas and fewer grout lines make for easier cleaning, meaning they’re hygienic whilst remaining chic and stylish.   Featured above are Nord Ris - a cement effect tile in cool, soft tones of grey - and Kaamos, an elegant and refined stone look. Both options are perfect for floors, team them with natural colours and textures like wood, marble and exposed brick for a cool and contemporary look that also has a warm and welcoming feel.   Beautiful Bathrooms Bathrooms also benefit from the properties of large-format tiles, especially in smaller areas where they can make a room look much bigger than it really is, helping to create a sense of scale that doesn't naturally exist. But more obviously, their grand scale can really make a bathroom look amazing!   For a totally on-trend spa-style bathroom take a look at Mediterraneo. It's extra-large format (900 x 900mm) and has a light yet bold texture with a rustic feel available in three gorgeous shades. Use on walls and floors for a seamless look. For a really opulent feel check out Bianco Oro, a marble effect tile with beautiful gold veining. This highly polished glazed porcelain tile is available in two large format sizes (900x900mm and 1200x600mm) and perfect for those looking to create a luxurious feel. We’ve teamed it with Boreal Natural, a wood effect tile with widely varying faces, to add warmth and depth. If neither of those tick your boxes, try the soft travertine effects of Mescla. It's neutral tones and subtle texture effects will work in many bathroom settings. There’s also St Martin with subtle veining and sophisticated grey shades to fashion a high-end smooth finish.   Stylish Spaces If you’re looking to update your hallway, it’s really worth considering tiles; you only need to search for hallway ideas on Pinterest to see why so many people are installing tiles into their hallways. Not only do they look fantastic but they are also ideal for enduring the heavy traffic of everyday life. Below we’ve styled our Pietra Lombarda terrazzo style tiles with minimalist furniture and accessories for a sleek yet Scandi vibe. These tiles work well in open plan living, with beautiful detailing that replicates the 'Ceppo de Gré' style of natural stone which features large flecks and rich detailing. Large format tiles are also ideal for utility rooms and can be used on walls and floors to create stylish yet practical spaces. The kitchen is the heart of the home and often a difficult project to design whilst prioritising practicality. A great deal of thought goes into the look and feel of cabinetry, lighting, paint colours, furniture, fixtures and fittings, but does as much consideration go into selecting tiles? Many homeowners opt for paint on the walls to avoid having to install tiles, but this can be a false economy. Both wall and floor tiles provide a clean and hygienic surface that won’t be damaged by cooking splashes or constant wiping and can really enhance the finished look of the space.   Natural and neutral It’s no surprise that many of us opt for natural and neutral colour schemes; they’re simply beautiful and add a cosy feeling, thanks to the warm undertones of browns, creams and taupes found in a natural colour palette. These shades reflect the warm rustic shades of the earth and can be enlivened with dark leafy greens or coppers and golds for a touch of glamour. If this is the style you’re looking to create, it’s worth considering wood-effect floor tiles. Natural wood flooring can be high maintenance and subject to damp, woodworm and the scratches and scuffs of everyday life.  With the developments in ink-jet tile printing, wood-effect floor tiles now look as good as the real thing; check out the full range here. Here, we’ve teamed Natural Slate in Burnt Sienna with Levantine ivory wall tiles for the perfect country kitchen in soft neutral tones, for that blissful homely feeling.       Keep it simple with Field Tiles There’s a reason field tiles have remained a staple trend in tiling and interiors for decades. They are a classic choice and simple enough to work in harmony with so many kitchen styles, with the option of different colours, sizes and finishes. The field tile has a long history in interiors due to their functional yet decorative qualities. Whether your kitchen style is contemporary, modern or an eclectic mix of both, you can be sure that field tiles will in, some way or other, work easily into your scheme.  Just take a look at the beautiful settings below that showcase how a simple field tile can complete a space. Installing field tiles in a grid layout is one of the most popular tiling methods, but field tiles can also be brick bonded to add an extra element of interest.     Be bold with a statement floor Flooring is fundamentally a functional design aspect in a room. It can often be overlooked in the design process or thought that functional needs to be plain to be practical. Nowadays this is no longer the case, recent years have seen vast developments in ink-jet printing – meaning beautiful patterns can be printed onto practical porcelain tiles! There’s a whole host of options out there from bold patterns (check out the Odyssey collection) to all sorts of heavily detailed wood and stone-effect tiles. For an authentic look, its worth considering Victorian Floor Tiles. There’s a wealth of patterns, designs and colours to choose from, all with the advantage of longevity due to their hard-wearing nature.  This means Victorian Floor tiles are perfectly suited to kitchens that endure high traffic, spills and the daily tread of busy families!      Experiment with layouts If you’ve opted for simple cabinetry or a more contemporary style, but you’re still looking to add that pop of interest, why not try tiling in a herringbone layout? Any brick tile can be ‘herringboned’ but it works especially well with ‘kit-kat’ style brick tiles that are long and thin. This is also a great way to introduce colour into scheme whilst including some texture and interest.    Feature walls The kitchen is the perfect place for a feature wall, especially if you’re looking for a way to inject a bit of personality and style into a practical space. We’ve recently welcomed exciting additions to our contemporary Tileworks collection to reflect exciting trends in interior design. The updated collection comprises a multitude of size formats, innovative textures and a wide range of finishes, colours and effects – suitable for every taste, location and setting. What a dream!   To introduce the new arrivals, we’ve comprised the following list to showcase some of our firm favourites. So, go and grab a cuppa, sit back and prepare to be inspired. When it comes to tiles, recent trends suggest that size does in fact matter. Our new steel range is big, bold and beautiful and is an exciting introduction to the Tileworks metal effect range.  It’s large format measuring in at 1200 x 600mm, makes for a dramatic statement. Alongside its ethereal textures and rich colour variations comprising Concept, Black and the stunning Midnight Blue, Steel will add intense dimension to any space. Keep on reading to find out more about the new products or just be inspired by our new photography!   Bricking it There’s no denying the beauty of these new Montblanc brick tiles, a brilliant choice for kitchens and bathrooms, especially for those lusting after some luxe. Brick tiles are getting a lot of limelight lately, with homeowners opting for contemporary layouts like stack bond and herringbone to liven up dull spaces. Mix together all four colours, Blue, Pearl, White and Anthracite for a gorgeous feature wall or just use one shade alone, either way these tiles will add some luxury. These additions complement the existing Montblanc collection, try teaming together with one of the large format tiles. We love how all of the sizes and colours work together.   Wonderful Wood Effect We’ve also complemented our Wood-effect collections with Oakwood and Krea. Oakwood comes in four realistic wood toned shades, shown below is Oakwood Nut, a gorgeous neutral blend suitable for all living spaces. Krea comes in three shades and two versions, with one suitable for inside and outside use, as well as wet areas. We’ve used it in a bathroom setting below and love the earthy grey undertones, teamed with contemporary fittings and fixtures for a cool contrast.   Krea also looks great in other areas of the home and is ideal as a neutral base for floors in living areas.   Industrial Style In concrete-effect, there’s Pescara, a matt large format tile which is available in a smooth or textured finish. The great thing about this range is how the two finishes work together. Try brick bonding to add some interest or keep it contemporary with a stack bond style. For something with a little more atmosphere we’ve added Shadow, which comes in 4 shades of grey.
