Over the past year, the need for creating calm and serene spaces within the home has become even more paramount. Confined to the walls that surround us, escapism and relaxation are what homeowners are seeking to achieve when updating an interior décor scheme – and we couldn’t be more on board with this design and lifestyle trend.   Our Sanctuary trend looks at ways to bring tranquility into the home to establish distinct areas for us to unwind in and harmonise our emotional well-being. When it comes to colourways, it’s all about the soft pinks and warm beige's to really embrace a calming and classic neutral palette. Textures also play a key part when it comes to designing a sanctuary. Tactile surfaces, either smooth and glossy or structured and matt, will help create a cosy, spa-like feel and tiles are the perfect material for incorporating either of these textures. With many of us now working and schooling from home, the way we’re using the spaces that surround us on a day-to-day basis has changed significantly. Pre-2020, our homes were predominately places of relaxation, socialisation and recreation and now, with the restrictions imposed in response to the pandemic, our properties have become more multi-functional than ever before.   Our Home Hub trend looks at creating spaces, within the home, that are dedicated working areas with décor solutions to motivate and focus the mind. It’s important that these spaces are created in isolation to allow us to shift between working and recreational zones so our homes can be used efficiently for multiple activities. It’s incredibly important that working spaces are kept separate and distinct for our own well-being and our Home Hub trend will help you achieve just this.   For those who have a spare room or ample garden space, the natural step might be to create a working hub by converting a room into an office or investing in a garden room or shed conversion. However, if such spaces aren’t available, adapting existing spaces is also something to consider. By sectioning off an area of your living, dining, kitchen or bedroom you could easily establish a working ‘zone’ that has its own office vibe in order to create an isolated feel. Naturally, we’re big fans of tiles here at Original Style, but there really is a tile for every area of the home. With recent trends seeing homeowners wanting to create seamless, open plan spaces using long-lasting, practical materials, tiles are the answer to many interior design needs. They are brilliant for creating synergy throughout the home and can be used as a basis to build upon to create many styles and trends, they also provide more durability than perhaps carpet, wood, laminate or lino. For many of us, our priorities and lifestyles have altered dramatically and it was inevitable that such a sudden transformation of circumstances would completely change how we look at and use the spaces within our properties.   Each year, Original Style forecasts interior trends for the upcoming year working with industry and in-house experts to determine what styles, designs and colourways are likely to be popular so we can look at our tile ranges and help customers choose products to best achieve each of the predicted looks. This year is a little different. As a result of changing behaviours and everyday life, we considered it necessary to look at evolved lifestyle trends, to further understand the new priorities within the home, so we could inspire the embrace of the new normal and help customers adapt spaces to better suit their interior needs. Working alongside our in-house design experts, Jane Addis and Becca Keenan, we’ve determined three key home lifestyle trends that research suggests will be of most interest to homeowners over the coming year. So, without further ado, let’s talk trends!     Sanctuary Sanctuary is all about creating a calm, safe and tranquil space within the home to de-stress and escape from the worries and angst that life can bring. “With the global pandemic having an impact on our mental health, it’s vital that we create an isolated space, within our home, which brings serenity and allows us to take some time out to focus on our emotional wellbeing. Our environments have the ability to affect the way we think so this trend is about creating spaces that instill peace. Choosing a colour scheme for your kitchen, bathroom, or any room in your home can be a difficult decision, especially with a myriad of colours available! It’s worth doing your research to find a colour scheme that you feel comfortable with (and can live with!) as well as one suited to the style of your home. We’ve put together four tips to help make the process less daunting and help you select the best tiles for your space…   1. Research Tiles are often an afterthought when it comes to home makeovers, but they have the power to completely transform a room. After researching online, visiting your local dealer is a good place to start; here you can browse inspiring displays and get advice from friendly and knowledgeable staff, but most importantly get samples to test in your own home. When selecting a colour there are three basic schemes to choose from, tonal, harmonious and complementary. A tonal scheme is the use of one colour but in varying hues, for some this may be too plain but adding in texture is a great way to alleviate the potential blandness of a single colour. For example if you have opted for white neutral cabinets and décor, a white textured tile like Fusuma adds immediate detail and interest. A harmonious scheme is balanced and easy on the eye, using colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel. Complementary colours are opposite each other on the colour wheel, for example pink and green. This type of colour scheme is great if you are looking for something more striking.   2. Style of property Considering the style of your home is also important when selecting colour. If you have a modern new build it may not suit traditional dark red and buff Victorian Floor Tiles, but if you love the look, a neutral colourway like grey and white as pictured below, is better suited to a new build. Likewise with period properties, applying brightly coloured jewel toned mosaics to the bathroom could look out of place, but if you want to embrace a daring colour you can still do so with the Artworks collection, try a bold Baroque Blue for depth and atmosphere.   3. Considering your space The size of your room can also guide your colour choice, if you are updating a smaller room and want to make the most of the space, it’s common sense to opt for lighter shades. This needn’t mean white, grey or beige, using pastel shades is a nod to introducing some colour without the commitment of a bold shade.
